Mary's Route is first and foremost a community.

Our network brings together volunteers, local associations, municipalities, cultural institutions, tourism professionals, and international partners who share a common vision: preserving and promoting Europe's cultural heritage while strengthening cooperation across borders.

We believe that cultural routes are living spaces where heritage is experienced rather than simply observed. Through community events, educational programmes, volunteering, and international youth exchanges, we encourage people to engage actively with local traditions, landscapes, and one another.

By connecting people with nature, culture, and local communities, Mary's Route creates opportunities for lifelong learning, intercultural dialogue, and responsible tourism. Every journey contributes not only to the discovery of new places, but also to the preservation of the cultural and natural heritage that makes Europe unique.

Exhibition of Pilgrimage Moments Along Mary's Route

Presented during a conference in Mátraverebély for municipalities contributing to Mary's Route, the photography exhibition offered visitors an intimate glimpse into the everyday reality of long-distance pilgrimage. Through images capturing landscapes, shared meals, moments of exhaustion, encounters with local communities, and the simple rhythm of walking, participants could experience both the beauty and challenges of life on the route.

More than a documentary display, the exhibition transformed personal journeys into a shared cultural narrative. It demonstrated how photography can make the values of cultural routes visible, encouraging dialogue about community, heritage, and sustainable tourism. By presenting pilgrimage as a slow and meaningful way of experiencing places and people, the exhibition inspired local stakeholders to view their settlements not merely as destinations, but as active participants in Europe's living cultural landscape.

Exhibition of the Art Nouveau Route

During one of Mary's Route's conferences, university students were invited to explore a small exhibition presented by the Hungarian representative of the Art Nouveau Route. The display featured symbolic objects and design elements representing the route and the distinctive artistic heritage of Art Nouveau, offering participants a hands-on introduction to one of Europe's shared cultural movements.

Designed specifically for young participants, the exhibition aimed to bring cultural heritage protection closer to university students by demonstrating that heritage can be experienced through artistic expression, craftsmanship, and everyday objects. By engaging directly with these materials, participants gained a greater appreciation of the role that cultural routes play in preserving and communicating Europe's artistic heritage and inspiring new generations to become active custodians of cultural memory.

Marian Gardens

Living Spaces of Culture and Creativity

[D1] The Marian Gardens initiative creates welcoming green spaces along and around Mary's Route that invite visitors to pause, rest, and reconnect with both nature and local culture. Combining landscape design, local artistic elements, and symbols of regional identity, the gardens represent cultural heritage through carefully shaped environments that are both aesthetically appealing and deeply rooted in their surroundings.

Beyond their visual value, the gardens provide practical opportunities for physical and mental well-being, offering peaceful places for relaxation, reflection, and community encounters. They also encourage visitors to discover local traditions, gastronomy, and craftsmanship, demonstrating how cultural and artistic practices can transform public spaces into living expressions of heritage. The continuously expanding network of Marian Gardens is a source of particular pride for Mary's Route, showing how cultural routes can create new, accessible places where art, landscape, and community life come together in meaningful and sustainable ways.

Pilgrim – Sign – Image – Route Exhibition

Organised by Mary's Route and presented in Nitra, Slovakia, the Pilgrim – Sign – Image – Route exhibition invited visitors into the experiential world of pilgrimage through photographs, visual narratives, and representations of the many towns and landscapes connected by the route. Rather than focusing solely on destinations, the exhibition portrayed pilgrimage as a journey shaped by encounters, movement, and the changing relationship between people and places.

By translating the experience of walking into a visual language, the exhibition demonstrated how artistic practices can make cultural routes more accessible and emotionally engaging. The large number of visitors reflected a growing interest in discovering heritage through immersive storytelling, with many leaving the exhibition with a renewed appreciation for the beauty of slow travel and the cultural richness found along Mary's Route.

Street Galleries – Moments of Slow and Sustainable Tourism

Members of Mary's Route's youth network organised open-air street exhibitions in Granada and Luxembourg, showcasing photographs of pilgrimage experiences along the route. By bringing these images into public spaces, the exhibitions introduced international audiences to the values of slow and sustainable tourism, highlighting meaningful encounters, the beauty of travelling at a human pace, and the importance of Europe's rural regions. Through artistic storytelling, the exhibitions demonstrated how cultural routes can inspire more conscious ways of travelling while promoting lesser-known destinations and the communities that give them their unique character.
